Janice Shigehara - Lavender Teabag Sachet
1.5” x 5”
Nikko G nib, Dr. Ph. Martin’s Bleedproof White applied to teabag, colored with watercolor.
A unique feature of writing on teabags is that a delicate hand is needed, as there are tiny perforations in the teabag designed so water can flow through, which can easily catch the nib especially if a heavy hand is used.

Janice Shigehara - Gratitude
5” x 5”
At the center is an embossed gold stamp of my family crest on Arches textwove. Surrounding that is barbed wire drawn with a Micron .01 black pen. I mounted this on gold cardstock then used clothesline lettering on Arches textwove with Micron .03 pen and gold Prismacolor pencil for color outside the letters.
The inspiration for this piece was the stamping of the book containing the names of the 125,000 Japanese and Japanese-Americans who were held against their will in the U.S., during 3 years of WWII, in what the government called internment camps. So our family had a reunion at the Japanese American National Museum where we stamped the book, next to our relatives names. It was a moving experience and brought up deep feelings of gratitude for what they endured, some even fighting in the armed services while their parents were confined in the camps, to prove they were loyal Americans.

Marilyn Rice, Jennie Bannister, Susan Gunter and Cindy FitzGerald - Collaboration #1
The top left corner by Marilyn Rice, top right by Cindy FitzGerald, bottom left by Susan Gunter and bottom right by Jennie Bannister.
each 5" x 7"
We wanted to work on collage techniques (we were all new to this idea) and chose a photo to work off and then each worked separately on a quadrant.
We used mulberry paper, watercolors, colored pencil. We colored or painted on newspaper or other decorative paper to get the colors we wanted. A glue stick or white glue was used as the adhesive.
